Crucible Anticipation Revisited 1/17

  1. Statement: Confessing to a crime you didn’t commit in order to avoid punishment is wise.
    Before: - After: +
It may not seem the moral thing to do, and sometimes it might not be the best thing to do but in some situations it can be the correct choice to make. For example in the Crucible those who confess are saved from the noose which to me is a simple lie that can save your life. So what it you confess, I don’t see how it can really tarnish your name. Those who actually know you will know that you only confessed to save yourself and probably will not hold it against you. Another example I came across during physics. This was after we were allowed to have cell phones but Landweir still doesn’t allow them. Someone’s phone went off during class, and at the time he ignored it, but at the end of class he didn’t let anyone leave until the person gave up their phone. Of course as mature as the guilty person was, (cough cough Jason Kuske, at least so everyone suspected) he would not give it up. To save both herself and everyone else from sitting there for god knows how long someone else gave theirs up and we got out of class. Her giving up her phone, and assuming the guilt may have excused the guilty person but everyone else sure appreciated it.

Justice is not best determined in the court of law. AS proven by the salem witch trials, hysteria can elimanate all commen sense in human beings. There are to many biassed people in the world. They are overcome by personal beleifs to be reasonable in the court of law.

  3. After reading The Crucible my opinion on the statement, “a person is innocent until proven guilty” has changed. During The Crucible people were guilty no matter what the situation. People were not given fair trails which caused many innocent people to die. “Hear say” in Salem was almost all you needed to convict someone but now courts need hard evidence to be condemn. Abigail William accused many people of being witches and without proof they were hanged. “Hear say” in Salem is almost as bad as “hear say” in Kiel. One person can say this person did this and they will more than likely be blamed. People should have efficient evidence before accusing people of a crime.

  4. It is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life. Before+ After+
When you strongly believe in something, then you should always follow it, no matter how much you can lose over it. For example, in the end of act four, John Proctor was going to confess to seeing the devil. However, right before he was going to hand in his paper, he tore it up. He believed that dieing with the truth is way better than living with a lie. So many people stop believing in what they think is right and just go with what others think to get out of suffering the conscience. I think that is wrong, you should always go with what you believe in, no matter what you have to do to follow those beliefs.

  5. Statement: That which doesn't destroy us only makes us stronger.
    Before: + After: -

Before I thought that if things didn't kill one, it had to make them stronger as a person. After reading The Crucible I don't think that is right. I mean, honestly, some situations break you down and make you weaker. For example, John Proctor having an affair destroyed his relationship with his wife, it certainly did not help anything what so ever. He seemed to question everything because of it. If he didn't sleep with Abigail the witch trials might not have taken place, therefore saving many lives.

  6. Statement: A person is innocent until proven guilty
I have changed my opinion on this statement. I thought before reading the crucible that you were innocent until you are proven guilty until proven. My opinion changed because when you’re guilty but no one else is aware you personally know that you’re guilty. Also you will feel the guilt eating away at you. A court of law cannot always prove that you’re guilty so does that make you innocent? No, because you again know that your guilty. In the Crucible John Proctor confessed saying he did indeed had dealings with the devil. He actually had no dealings with the devil and confessed again and said that he had nothing to do with the devil. He now will die with dignity and truth.

  7. I believe that it is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life for a few reasons. The first reason being is that only you as a person can decide what is truly right or wrong. This relates to the Crucible because John Proctor is hanged for saying that he is not a witch and he dies proud because of this. Another reason that I believe it is better to die for what you believe in is because I would not want a person to manipulate me into saying something I don't believe is true. This would only show that you value more time in your life more than your personality and personal beliefs. In conclusion, I believe that your own personal beliefs in life are some of the best attributes about you as a whole, and nothing should manipulate you into saying otherwise.

  9. The difference between right and wrong is clear.
Sometimes you cannot tell the difference between right and wrong. The people in the specific society decided what is right and wrong. The Taliban think that it’s ok to blow themselves up to get what they want and we here in the united states think that it is a bad thing.

I have changed my opinion on statement one “Confessing to a crime you didn’t commit in order to avoid punishment is wise”. During the time period of The Crucible, I feel it would be wise to confess to a crime you didn’t commit. I feel this because you would be hanged if you didn’t confess to doing witchcraft. I would rather live and have lied than die for something I didn’t do. People would look at you differently for what you said you did, but I feel it would be worth it.

    Before:- After: +

After reading The Crucible, I agree with the statement "Courage means doing something even though it can be difficult and fearsome." It took a lot of courage for John Proctor to admit that he had an affair with Abigail. He knew that his wife would be hurt and the community would disaprove. John was trying to help save many lives by making this confession. Sometimes people have to do things that are scary but they get through it because they have courage. It took John a lot of courage to rip up the document that the court wanted him to sign. He wanted to save his good name.

  12. After reading The Crucible I changed my mind on the statement that: Confessing to a crime you didn’t commit in order to avoid punishment is wise. If you’re going to be punished with death than yes I think it would be wise to confess to a crime you did not commit. This also depends on how much you really value your life. If it was any other situation I would probably say that I do disagree. If you didn’t do something, why should you confess to it? Lying is bad, so you should not do it. Death as a punishment though makes the stakes different and I would confess to being a witch if I was in the situation, because I wouldn’t want to die.

  13. That which dosen't destroy you only makes you stronger. Before ? After +

I agree because when you are having all this crap thrown at you, it dosen't hurt you. there are a lot of things that go on in peoples life and sometimes it hurts them phisically and mentally. things that don't destroy us really do make us stronger for the future.

  14. "That which doesn't destroy us only makes us stronger." I agreed with before and now. What hurt us before, only made us stronger to deal with something more complicated, and protect ourselves that may come at us in the future. Facing a problem proves to you and yourself that you are capable of during something. Pushing yourself through it.

Before I read The Crucible, I thought “Confessing to a crime you didn’t commit in order to avoid punishment is wise” was a stupid statement. However, after reading this book, I agree with the statement. Even if you don’t commit a crime, it would be smart to say you did the crime so you wouldn’t get punished, or, as what happens in the book, get killed. I would confess to something I didn’t do if I received no punishment.

"Courage means doing something even though it can be difficult and fearsome" I agreed with this before and after. By reading the Crucible it just showed me of how this statement is really lived out. If you overcome a fear it makes you have courage and makes an impact on your life. No matter how hard to challenge is, if you are willing to overcome it you have amazing courage.

I think now, after reading The Crucible, that it is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life. Before reading the book I felt that life is too important to get rid of, but after I read the story I realized that in certain circumstances it is better to die in order to prove loyalty. I would have probably died if I was Proctor because I could not live with knowledge that my friends died morally and I am alive because of lies. If I lie doesn’t affect anyone else I wouldn’t see the problem if I would live. I think being a martyr would at least give Proctor a good name. I would sooner be a hero that a witch or a liar. Even though I would die I would be happier when I am found heroic than if I would stay alive putting fear into people who actually believe in such nonsense. I would be able to make up the experiences that I miss in life by having better experiences in death. I am surprised that this is my only viewpoint that changed on my anticipation reaction guide worksheet. I think this question is still a debatable one though because my feelings are still mixed due to the lack of my knowledge about what happens past life. The Crucible demonstrates how a true moral should die. I think that would be a good way to get recognized, but I think Proctor would have been recognized even if he lived a lie because he would have saved some of his friends at least.

  18. Confessing to a crime you didn't commit in order to avoid punishment is wise.
    Before:- After:?
To if you did not commit the crime then definitely try to prove your side of the story. However if you are about to be killed and have a spouse that is in desperate need of a person to support them and allow for that person to be free of some of their duties then why not confess. In many cases people do or do not confess to their wrong doings as a way to lessen the punishment, however there are many people whom there was very little evidence against whom did not confess but indeed suffered the consequences.

  19. My views have changed after reading the crucible. For the statement the difference between right and wrong is clear. I agree and disagree with the statement that said the difference between right and wrong is clear. I agree with this statement for the reason, one of the reasons is that I think one can tell what they are getting themselves into. Such ass going into an environment where you know that it probably isn’t the best place to be. Everyone or most people get a feeling that tells you and this is probably not the best idea. I know and understand that some people don’t really care or think about what is right and what is wrong. But if one is a good person or well behaved they will know and get that feeling where something is not right. So now I disagree with this statement because there might be that one situation where you are placed there and can’t do anything about it. And like I said before most people get that feeling when they know something is not right. But there is always that one person or one time where you don’t get that feeling and you are stuck in a bad situation that you can’t get yourself out of by yourself. If you ever do get in a situation like that you should really try to get help right away from someone because if you don’t you could really get in trouble and maybe mess up your life.

-confessing to a crime you didn't commit is wise
Befoe reading the crucible, I thought that confessing to a crime you didn't commit was not wise under any circumstances. After reading the crucible, I changed my mind. I decided that the are some exeptions on when you should confess to a crime you did not do. If you are being accused of doing something that you did not do and your punishment is going to be something as serious as death, then I think that it would be okay to confess to the crime to avoid that consequence. Overall, I think that confessing to a crime that you did not do can be okay depending on the situation.

"It is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life."
    Before +. After -.
I believed in this in the beginning, now I'm not so sure I still agree. In The Crucible, John Proctor died because he wanted to save his wife's life, not his own. He confessed that he was a witch so he could save his life, but he really isn't. Before that, he confessed that he really did commit lechery. But then Elizabeth got set up and lied to save him. This shows that sometimes it is better and sometimes it is not better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life.

Statement #1: "Confessing to a crime you didn't commint in order to avoid punishment is wise."
    Before +. After +.

After reading The Crucible my opinion remained unchanged because I believe you should do whatever you can to avoid serious punishment. The story of the Salem Witch Trials is a great story to back my opinion. So many innocent lives were taken during the trials and in John Proctor's case he could have saved himself from being hanged by making a false confession of himself commiting witchcraft. John would have lived a long life, he would live it with his wife Elizabeth and their new born baby that he won't see now because he had to express his pride. In a life-or-death situation like that, I would never hesitate to falsely confess so I can save my life, it is just simple logic. Giles Corey also could have lied and lived by simply saying Aye of Nay, but he had to be a tough bada$$ and get killed by being crushed with giant boulders on his chest. With those reasons, confessing to a crime you never commited is the most logical thing to do.

  23. I do not agree with the statement that somebody should be arrested for going against the majority of society. It's great to be your own person. The best, most prosperous countries are the most individualistic. Diversity and difference is great for society. I say go for it! Be your own person!
