  2. Statement 3. +

I believe that people should die for what they believe rather than living for something they do not. Dying for what you believe in makes a huge impact on the society. You will be influential to the community and encourage them stand up for what they believe in. You will more than likely be remembered for what you believed in. You may even be considered a hero for some. For example I believe teachers should get paid more. If the government was questioning people about my belief, I would tell them to tell the truth. I would not want them to protect my life for something I agree with. I would make my statement over and over even if it meant giving my life up. Now, if I denied my belief of increasing educator’s income, I would consider myself a coward. No one should be able to judge you by what you believe in. A person believes are what make them unique. We cannot be afraid of our beliefs’. We need to express them as much as we can.

I don’t believe that you should confess so a crime you didn’t commit to avoid to avoid punishment. I believe this because I don’t think that you should have to pay some one else’s crime. They are the person that committed the crime and law enforcement should do all that they can to catch the guilty person. I think that the difference between right and wrong is crystal clear. People should know what is right and wrong and know what they are expected of. I feel that this statement doesn’t go towards young children because they have to be taught what is right and wrong. I don’t feel that there is a certain way to interpret the bible. Every one understands it in a different way. I think that what destroys us only makes us stronger. There are many hardships in life that will bring you way down and you don’t think that you will be able to get back up. When you do get back up you used strength to get there and it made you stronger as a person. When you encounter a hardship again you can use this strength to get back up on your feet. I feel that it is very difficult to forgive yourself when the person you hurt doesn’t forgive you. I thinks its even more difficult when this person is some one that you love. I feel like I have let that person down and that they can’t look at me the same any more. Also I feel like they are in fear that I am going to hurt them over and over again and they will get fed up and not want to be my friend any more. I feel that a person if innocent until they are proven guilty. I feel this because you cant just accuse with out knowing all the facts. I think that is you believe in opposition that it shouldn’t be illegal. Every one should have a right to there own opinions and be able to think what they want. I also don’t believe that the court of law doesn’t determine justice. I think that many of the laws are unfair and not justified.

I believe there are many different ways to interpret the bible so I strongly disagree with question number four on the worksheet. I feel that the bible is only a guide to become a moral person through fables and real-life experiences. Different parables and psalms have many hidden meanings that adapt to various circumstances. The concept of what the bible explains becomes more irrelevant through time as science expands. Priests, deacons, bishops, popes and other members of the religious community have been changing the bibles meanings to bring morality back to people all over the world. The problem is that other people use their interpretations of the bible to do unethical or illegal things.
If there was only one correct way to interpret the bible less confusion would occur because many people argue about religious ideas and what the bible really means. Not all people follow the bible’s rules. Instead they have other religious books that also contain many different meanings too. I believe that there are millions of ways to comprehend the bible of today. Although not all the ways are correct, there is definitely more than one right way of which any religious book can be interpreted.
Some recent people have tried to persuade people that the bible agrees with homosexuality and illegal aiding of immigrants that come to countries without the correct papers. Other people have gone against these groups of individuals because the bible is meant for morality. Both sides of the discussion assume that the other is misreading the bible. The authors of the bible most likely felt that change in society would occur; therefore they made the bible flexible so that religions could use it throughout time.

  6. Statement 5. That which doesn’t destroy us only makes us stronger.

I completely agree with this comment because with any experience even unpleasant ones you gain an experience that can provide knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. With every experience a lesson is learned. This theory applies to any situation, big or small. For example say you fail a test in a class, it is a bad thing yes, but it has a silver lining. By failing the test you learn that next time you need to try harder, study more, or double check your answers. As another example say someone close to you dies, a horrendous incident, yes, but through that experience a person can gain an acceptance of death. This acceptance is crucial because death is just a natural conclusion to life. As you can see even bad experiences lead to at least a little good. That is why whatever doesn’t destroy us only makes us stronger.

The statement to which I am referring is "There is only one correct way to interpret the Bible." I strongly disagree with this statement. The Bible means different things to every different religion. Some religions interpret it as something bad and other religions see it as a good thing to have. The Bible was written thousands of years ago. Many changes have been made to the Bible from its original form. People can interpret the "lessons" in the bible in many different ways. There has been a lot of debate on whether the Bible is even true. Everyone has a different outlook on the Bible and interprets their own understanding of it. The Bible has hidden meanings throughout it which many people don't realize. Many people do not like what they read in the Bible so they make up their own ideas. I am okay with the fact that people have different interpretations of the Bible. No one will ever see eye to eye especially when it comes to the Bible. Different religions have certain opinions and beliefs about the Bible. The beliefs sometimes play a role in how the Bible is interpreted. Other books sometimes describe the Bible in an easier way to understand. However, the author of the other books might interpret the Bible in one way so the reader may not get the "right" information. Interpreting the Bible depends on the reader and what his or her beliefs might be. In reality, it really does not matter how one interprets the Bible. Everyone is entitled to there own ways of understanding something and they have the right to believe what they want.

    Nicole Sixel

I agree with Sam. Everyone has different beliefs and I don’t believe that someone should be afraid to speak their mind. People that die for what they believe in are honored more for their achievements. People that go to war and do not make it home are honored and respected for their integrity and passion for out country. Soldiers died for what they believed in which was freedom for our country. People that die for what they believe in rather than lie to save their life may have been a strong role model for someone and maybe even a hero. They showed that you should stick up for what you believe in until you die. That is a very important lesson. Many people want to fight for a cause which is helping the world. One example is The Freedom Riders. They were traveling across the South for civil rights awareness. There bus was bombed and many were injured and killed because they were fighting for something they believed in. This act created an awareness of inequality and prejudice that blacks faced. They did not lie about the injustice and just go along with the mistreatment so that they would live longer. They knew what they were facing but they were not afraid because they would rather die for what they believed in. I think that is a very brave thing to do and it shows a lot of character to stick up for what you believe in.

  9. I strongly agree with the statement that said it’s more difficult to forgive yourself if the person you have hurt doesn’t forgive you. I agree with this statement because this has happened to me before and I felt really bad for what I did that person and I totally understood why they didn’t forgive me. But it was really hard to forgive myself because I knew I was in the wrong and I wanted them to forgive me. I wanted them to forgive me because they were my best friend and I wanted them back in my life, but they were not ready to be. So then it was really hard for me and got really down on myself because I know it wasn’t anyone issue but my own. Also I believe that it is way more difficult to forgive yourself especially when the person doesn’t forgive you because if you were really close to them it might hurt you more than them because you don’t like hurting you friends and you feel really bad. Lastly when you do hurt someone and you have apologized for it many times and tried to gain their trust back its difficult to just stand there and wait for them to come around. All you want to do is be back to normal with them and you have to wait for they are ready and that is not always easy and may take a lot long than one expects it on taking.

The statement it is more difficult to forgive yourself if the person you have hurt does not forgive you. I say this is true, because if you have apologized to this person as many times as you could and they still don’t forgive you, then yes it will be hard to forgive yourself for what you have done to that person. Also whatever you did to this person you will live with this guilt for a long time or until the person forgives you. In many ways this person is holding a grudge on you for what you did, and that’s not right unless, it was really terrible what you did. Some people might say well I really do not care what they think of if they forgive me or not. But that is a lie, most people do care what people are thinking about them. The more the people start to think and not forgive you then you will maybe eventually just give up on apologizing to them and let them hold the grudge on you. But some will keep apologizing until the other person eventually gives in and forgives you, because they got so annoyed or bothered by you that they figure oh well I will just say I forgive them, but I really do not. Also it depends on how bad you hurt this person, because if it was a minor thing then they should easily forgive you, but if it was a major thing then I could see them not forgiving you, and also if it was only a minor thing then they just might be holding a grudge on you, like if you did something before to make them angry.

I believe that justice in the world is not best determined by court of law for many reasons. The first reason I believe in this is because not every crime or wrongdoing is sent to court to be decided. I think that the person committing the crime or wrongdoing of any sort will be the only person that can truly deal with what he or she did, unless in fact it does go to court and that person gets sent to jail or prison. Another reason I believe in the court system not being the only way to determine justice is because I don't believe every law in court is always correct. I think that sometimes the defendant is unfairly prosecuted against in court, and this has been proven true many times when people were sent to prison when they were in fact innocent. This can also be the opposite when guilty people are sent free after the jury finds them not guilty. This is a very unfortunate circumstance because a person cannot be tried twice for the same crime that they were originally being tried for. This is also a prime example of how even things in court can be unjust, and that really is a worry to anyone who is being tried upon in the court systems around the world. No matter what happens in our court system, in the end everyone has their own opinion on what they believe is just and unjust in our world, but a thing that can help us out with these problems should be the court systems.

  12. Brittany Meyer-
I believe in the statement “It’s better to die for what you believe in rather than lie to save your life.” I feel it is more important to die happy than live hiding your true beliefs. Everyone is different and each person has their own personal beliefs. People shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for what they believe in and speak their mind. There have been many people who have died because they stood up for what they believed in. These people will always be remembered and honored. Dying for what you believe in demonstrates true character and bold personality. The future will be changed if someone dies for what they believe in. Hopefully this change is for the best, and makes society better. I can’t imagine lying to save my life. I would never be able to forget the lie and forgive myself. Therefore I would be making my life more stressful and challenging. It is important that people stand up for what they believe in while you are alive. Lying affects ones conscience, and for most people a lie will affect the rest of their life. A lie that is great enough to save someone’s life is a huge deal, and would be impossible to forget. To stand up for what you believe in shows bravery and strong personal beliefs. In today’s society, most people will respect your decision and admire ones inner strength. Therefore, I would rather die for what I believe in than lie to save my life.

  13. Brittany Meyer-Response to Nicole Sixel

I agree 100% with Nicole. There will never be just one interpretation of the bible. Every religion has a different understanding of parts of the bible. In the world, there are countless numbers of religions. I think it is okay for people to have their own beliefs in the bible, and individual beliefs shows true character. In my opinion, there will never be an agreement about the true meaning of the bible.

Statement 3- It is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life. I agree with this statement because everyone has their own beliefs. I think that if you truly believe in something certain you should stand up for what you believe rather than lying and not standing up for what you believe in. This should especially be talked about in high schools. There are many people who do stand up for what they believe but there are also many people who just follow the crowd and become peer pressured. I think it is a positive choice to die for what you believe because many people will also look up to you from dying for what you believe. Personally I think that I would look up to someone who has made and impact just by simply standing up for what they believe in. Many people think that it is not worth to die about but many people stand up strongly for what they believe in, mostly to show how big of an impact it can truly make on people. People should stand up for what they believe in to make sure that people don't lie and take the easy way out of things, if people truly believe in their choice than they should have the strength to stand up for that thing they believe in and risk their life just so people know what they truly are about. So if you truly believe in your choice, stand up for it without any doubts and risk you life.

  15. I strongly agree with the statement: That it is more difficult to forgive yourself if the person you have hurt doesn’t forgive you. People know right and wrong. When we do something mean our conscious is supposed to kick in, and we should feel bad about it. It may be hard, but people do really feel better when they take responsibility and say they are sorry. People do make mistakes, and sometimes you can only say sorry so many times. If you did something extreme you can try and make it up to a person, but in truth they might not ever forgive you. It’s not like they have never made mistakes before, but if they do not want to forgive you they do not have to. This is when you just have to move on and stop focusing on the fact that you may have lost a friend. All you can do is move on with life. Yes it would have made you feel better quicker if they forgave you, and it would have made it much easier but if not oh well. Life would always be easy if you could do things and say sorry and make everything better. Life is harder than that. Every action we make has a reaction. With this in mind we should try not to hurt people’s feelings because it will make yourself feel bad, and then you will never even have to worry about them having to forgive you in the first place.

  16. #3. It is better to die for what you believe in rather than to lie to save your life.

I disagree with this statement for many reasons. The first being common since, why on earth would you take your life just to prove a point, its just not logical. I too have strong opinions on certain problems in the world but nothing that would make me risk my life for. Even if one would die for what they belive in their probability of making a difference is not very high. In the rare occurance of your death making a difference in what you believed in, you would not be able to live it, or see the difference that you made whatsoever. And if you did this to benifit others as well as yourself you would have no way of knowing if you helped them. Futhermore it would be benificial in no aspect of life for one to die for what they beileve in.

  17. #10 Justice is best determined in the court of law

I totally disagree with this Statement. Justice is best determined in the court of law. This is so not true. So many times people have gotten away with killing, stealing, hit and runs, exedra, exedra….. Sometimes even innocent people are proved guilty somehow. I think that are justice system is rigged with money the person with the highest pay check wins in the court house my prime example is the movie Law Abiding Citizens. This movie is about two men who kill a guy’s wife and child. During the court date one man gets death the other who actually did it gets only 5 years. When the guy gets out of jail he is kid napped and dismember piece by piece. Soon after the guy who did it was arrested, the man who’s family was killed. From inside the prison he tares apart the justice system. In this movie it shows how corrupt lawyers or judges can really be. I think that sometimes you need to take things into your own hands and find justice because you won’t always find it in a court room. In this movie he took matters in to his own hands and he still got screwed over by justice. I believe that are justice system should be changed to make it better for people who have a hard time finding a lawyer or flat out are trying to prove themselves not guilty.

  18. Why do I believe in the belief I believe in?

It all started when I was a young girl. My parents took me to church and also sent me to a catholic school. They taught me the meaning of being and what a Christian really is. I learned that it is a religion upon the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. I celebrate his life by Christmas. I learn of how he was born through the Holy Spirit and Mary. He was born in a manger and shepherds and wise men came to visit and give gifts. That is why we give gifts and visit others. I also learned that people set nativity sets of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and sometimes wise men or shepherds to represent that night. I celebrate his death by going to mass on Good Friday and remember the crucifixion story. “He suffered, died, and was burred.” I celebrate the resurrection on Easter by going to church also to imagine and feel he is alive again. “…And on the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures…” We say the Apostles creed because that too has all the things a catholic believes in. “We believe in one God the father of the almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” I also believe in the creation story of how we all were made and the making of the earth. Some religions argue some Christian statements, and some agree somewhat. So when someone asks you what do you believe in, stop and think. What do you believe in? How did it start? Will it continue through your future to your kids?

Today everyone is able to have their own opinions, but what would life be like if we weren’t allowed to make our own judgments? What if we couldn't go against the crowd to express ourselves? What if we lived every day by our leader’s decisions, or by the Bible? I am happy that this is not the case for our living style. Personally, I think that belief in opposition to common values should not be illegal. If people couldn't believe in certain things, we may be living in a whole different world. For example, what if we all had the same religion, and wore the same tunics? Just think, if certain people, maybe even the beings we are writing our papers about, didn't go against the beliefs of everyone else maybe we wouldn’t have human rights, or maybe we wouldn't have the same inventions. In some, but surely not all, Amish communities, if a person decides to be "modernized," they can no longer be in contact with the community. If we all lived in that type of Amish environment, and Ben Franklin was punished for the invention of electricity, just think about all the wonderful things we have that would not exist. Surely, Ben Franklin would not be considered a great man in American history as well, for he most certainly would have attended a great portion of his life in jail along with various other inventors. This is only one of the many scenarios that could have drastically changed our lives if we had stricter laws of beliefs, but of course, there are many more.

I think the statement what doesn't destroy us makes us stronger. This to me can be applied in everyday life along with many other things. It can be used as a learning lesson also. If someone does something wrong such as get in a fight, or steal something, yes they pay the price but they don't die or anything. They then have to take some time to look back and evaluate the situation and see what went wrong and how they can change it. It can also be applied in sports, yes a loss is a loss, but once you knw what you did wrong to lose you can work to perfect the things and later on if given a second chance you will have the ability to go out and perform at a better level, bettering you and the others around you.

I disagree with squirrel's comment about the justice system. One reason being that in a court of law is the only way to get justice, as long as the law is interpretted correctly. If justice is attempted to be served without following the law then exceptions will eventually be made for people. If the law is interpretted correctly the no one can be above it, and everyone will serve the consequences for their crimes. A second reason i disagree with squirrel's statement is that he used a movie as his primary back up. Not exactly the best source of information.

Statement 9- Beleifs in opposition to commen values should be illegal.

I agree and dont agree with this statement. There are certain things that srent right no matter what your culture is. Such as puppy mills where dogs are raised in cages there wholes lives and often get sick or injured. This is the kind of beleife that isnt right at all. These animals have done nothing wrong and are punished just by being born.

Other beliefs such as relgion or racial beleifs need to be listened to. It cant be made illegal for being jewish or black. Thats not fair for the person who is either of these or any other kind. They cant help who they are in there beliefs and race. The past prosictuitons of these have been extremely unjust and should never have happened.

    Statement – 10

I disagree with the statement, “Justice is best determined in a court of law.” I do not always think people who are being charged with a crime always get the punishment they deserve if they are guilty. For instance, some people who are charged with a crime do not get any punishment at all, because they could say that the court process was moving to slow, and that violates the amendment to a speedy trial. I think the person who is being convicted should wait as long as it takes to prove that they are innocent. Also, some people who commit a crime do not get any punishment at all. Some get probation, but that does not really do anything because the convict is still outside of jail/prison. Another way justice could not be determined in a court of law is if the jury does not reach a verdict, and then the criminal would get cleared of any wrongdoing, which would not be justice. Another example of justice not being determined in a court of law is when an innocent person is convicted of a crime they did not commit. If the person is found guilty of murder, justice is most definitely not determined, but that person may have to spend the rest of their life in prison. These reasons are why I do not think justice is best determined in a court of law.

Confessing to a crime you didn’t commit in order to avoid punishment is wise.

I believe that confessing to a crime you did not commit in order to avoid punishment is not wise. First and foremost, I believe that it is not wise because you would be lying. Lying about something will never solve the problem. Whether it is right away, or a year later, lying will cause trouble. If you did not do anything wrong, then you should not be worried about receiving any type of punishment at all. Therefore, you would not have to lie about anything. If you did not commit any crime at all, you should be able to tell the truth about everything. If you did confess to a crime that you did not do, it would probably lead to more trouble. You would receive the punishment, and the person who really did the crime would get away with it and think that it is okay to do. Secondly, the person who did the crime should receive full punishment from the actions he/she committed. They should learn from their actions. Whoever commits the crime should receive the punishment so that they do not do the same felony again. If the right person receives the punishment, they will learn, and hopefully never do it again. No one should have to take the blame for any one else’s crimes. If someone is not brave enough to take on the punishment, then they should not commit the crime to start with. Overall, I believe that you should never confess to a crime that you did not commit just to avoid punishment.

  25. The difference between right and wrong are clear.

I agree with this however there still may be many gray areas no matter who is questioned. For me the right is doing what is told when its told and the wrong is not, However as you can tell I don't do what is always "right" however for me its not the when that thing is completed its the how. I almost never have the extra time to just sit down and think to myself what I did wrong today or what am I forgetting? However I can sit down and look at what I did to accomplish such and most of the time still feel pretty good about it. For example there has been many time that I have stuck up for friends of mine that are gay, most people think that making fun of them is funny and indeed fun. However I know from experience that it really does hurt those people. I have seen a gay friend of mine crying just because a upperclassmen man called him a "fag" and ever since I saw that I have been sticking up to the bullies and attempting to make them realize that its not cool, there is no prize and people who are gay are truly people but with a little different view on life.
