Am Enc 12/7- Civil Disobedience

As you know, civil disobedience is the intentional refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and rules of an authoritative power.  Choose an issue about which you feel strongly.  It could be in the school, local, or national community.  How could you use nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience to prompt change or bring attention to your issue?  Write a well-organized, paragraph response using proper conventions, grammar, and mechanics in which you detail your stance regarding the issue, your plan for civil disobedience (what law, demand, or rule are you disobeying?), and explain how it would help your cause.  Be sure to follow the eight rules of civil disobedience we examined yesterday.

I think schools should not wear uniforms. The reason is that people can't express their personality. They can't show who they are as a person, some people show the way that they act through their fashion choices. Many other reasons are that if schools do want uniforms that the students will try to "make it look better". So basically they would be breaking the rules. Those are the many reasons why we should not have uniforms.

The issue i would disobey is cell phone usage in school. I beleive that the school should allow cell phone usage in school during passage times and lunch. During these times we arent paying attention to anything anyway and most of us do it anyway. I would accept the concequences of the actions to prove my point in allowing phone usage in school.

I would raise issue to the PATRIOT ACT and the expansion of the PATRIOT ACT by having a nationwide Contact The Pentagon Day, where as many people as possible call the Pentagon and Contact via the site at the same time. This would cause their phone service and servers to possibly crash. I would also encourage everybody to wear my nifty T-Shirts reading, 'True Patriots follow the Constitution,' and 'You're no Patriot, Uncle Sam.'

A thing that I would don't agree with in todays society would be the curfew set into place in the city. Most people are out past 11 on a weekend and especially during the summer. Though cops are on the watch for it, it seems as if they don't really pull over people for it makes me wonder why it's even there? A way to be civilly disobedient to this cause would be to stay out past 11 p.m. It doesn't get much easier than that...

  5. Cassie - When I was little I stood up to bullies that were throwing rocks at a baby bunny. To me I knew that it was wrong for them to be doing such. I tried to get them to stop throwing the rocks at the bunny however they didn’t. So I pushed them out of the way and grabbed the bunny. Because I pushed them and got the bunny I was suspended from school, however my mother was proud of the fact that I stood up for something that couldn’t fend for its self that I was allowed to keep the bunny and she got me ice cream.

  6. An issue I have is with teacher salaries. Teachers work much harder then what most people suspect. For how much time and effort is done their salaries do not show for it. Although kids would enjoy it, teachers should "slack off" and not create lesson plans, grade assessments or anything. Teachers need to be rewarded for their hard work and their salary does not do them justice. Teachers need to do almost at little as they can until the school board notices and the issue is brought to attention. Having teachers do less then what they do already is having them actuly earn their pay. Some people get paid a good amount to do almost nothing and that is very unfair. I hope soon people will realise teacher do a lot more then what their salary shows.

  7. Should Students Be Allowed The Use of Their Cell Phones During School?

In Kiel High School, I personally would say about 85% of students have their cell phones on them during the day, and/or use them. Many of these students do this not to invoke any issue, but just to have a sense of self security and source of communitcation to the outside world in case of an emergency. If something were to happen at home, a mother could easily contact her son or daughter via text message. Also a student could use their phone to report an accident or call in destress of a inner-school incident. Many of this is good and true, by in order for it to be used effectively it should be regulated. Where students would be allowed the rights to use of their phone while in passing time in between classes, and during lunch period. In class, phones may be kept in student's pockets, but never to be brought out. If this were to occur, teachers may reposes the phones later to be returned the student after class or after schoool. So yes, students should be allowed the use of their phones during school.

  8. I disagree with some website restrictions at school because I feel as long as the cite is not innapropriate, kids can learn to be responcable. I could break the school's laws by having a bunch of kids hack into facebook, youtube, or miniclip. I would be breaking certain laws, know that I am breaking it, and the act would be public. I would have to accept my punishment. I think this senario follows all eight concepts.

An issue that has bothered me for a long time is the way people get Food Stamps. I believe that everyone that signs up for Food Stamps should automatically have to take a urine test. There are so many people in the country that have food stamps and still buy drugs and alcohol. In my opinion, if you can afford drugs and alcohol, you can most definately afford food. By changing the qualifications for Food Stamps, the government would lose a lot more money and people may even stop doing so many drugs. There should be so many more rules to qualify for anything such as, food stamps, welfare, etc. There would be a lot less problems with these things and people who really do need food stamps, will not be denied for it. In this case, I believe in my conscience, and I hope that somehow this will change.

I am seriously considering practicing civil disobediance to attempt to get out of this blog. I feel it is unjust that I am forced to give an opinion on this topic, when I have no strong opinions about it. I could chose to not post anything, and accept a zero. Doing something like this would show my opinion on this blog.

I don’t agree with the 2 inch strap on shirts at school. I feel that you should be able to wear spaghetti straps and tube tops. I think if your not showing to much chest it should be alright. Especially in the summer when it gets really hot in school it not very comfortable to wear t-shirts. I would peacefully start wearing tube tops and spaghetti straps to school. I will accept the consequence of being sent home. In hopes that other students will follow along with me and start wearing the apparel also. I hope that they will get sick of making girls change and change the dress code.

I feel that women should not be able to get abortions for any reason. I believe this because it is not the child's fault that the female got pregnant. One never knows if they are going to give birth to the next great scientist or mathematician. To protest against the women who are getting abortions (unless it is life-threatning to the mother and a doctor recomends it) I would possibly parade about with other non-abortion believers in front of facilities which promote abortion.

  13. I am against school uniforms. Kiel High School doesn’t have uniforms, but there are schools that do. I feel many students express their character and personality through their clothes. Uniforms are used in some schools because they “make them look nicer and professional”, but in reality I feel it doesn’t do that. I can’t imagine going to school and wearing the same thing as everyone else. Therefore if Kiel High School had school uniforms, I would not wear them.

I believe that cell phones should be allowed in school. In today's society, cellphones are pretty much a must have. Cellphones make communication between friends and family simple and easy. The majority of the school body uses cell phones in and during school. I don't think cell phones should be shut off and kept in someone's locker because a student may need to keep in contact with family for after school plans, emergencies, or simply a reminder to pick up something at the grocery store. Friends also can be able to keep in contact and help remind of homework assignments and such. A way to act out is to use cell phones during in school - and in front of staff or teachers and accept the consequences. It would be even better if more students would join in this act.

I think that the usage of cell phones should be changed in school. I think that we should be able to use cell phones in school. I think that teachers should take away phones during tests or quizzes then give them back after. If teachers do not like that rule then I think we should be able to use them during lunch and breaks in between classes. If students have their phone it is their choice to listen or not.

  16. I have an issue with Animal Shelters that put down animals that do not get adopted within two weeks. I feel that it is wrong for an innocent animal to be killed. I would bring attention to this issue by getting more people to take a strong interest in this issue. I would make a documentary about life inside the animal shelter so that people around the world can really see inside the shelters. I would rescue the animals that are close to being put down. I would be breaking and entering. This is a form of civil disobedience because I am breaking a law, acting publicly, and following a higher moral law.

I don't agree with abortion. Some people will agree with me. Abortion is wrong and kills lives. Here is a story about it.
One day there was a girl. She was going to have a baby, but she had know idea if she wanted it or not. She talked to her mom and she said,"keep it." She thought if she lost it she will never have one. She will accept her punishment, it is public, and follows all civil disobedience laws.

  18. The thing that I would disobey would be cell phones in school. To many times have I got my cell phone taken away for just having it in my pocket. What if one day the school is attacked, the power is cutt and we have no way of calling for help. Well if i had my cell phone with me I wouldnt need to worry about it becasue I would be able to call for help. A way to be civilly disobedient would be to have everyone to bring there phones to school and when the teachers try to take them away dont give them up.

I would say that we should be allowed to go out to our cars during the school day. I see my car almost as my locker. I have like everything in there, and I sometimes forget things in their like gym cloths or such. That's why I do not get why we aren't allowed to quick run out there for things we may have forgot. I could quick grab my gym cloths instead of taking a zero for changeing. I get that they do not trust some people, but that is not fair for the rest of us. If I wanted to I could go out to my car during school during 15min break so it would be public, and I would fully know I was doing something wrong. Thus it being an act of civil disobedience.

I think that sudents should have off campus lunch. Students should be able to go home or go out to eat where they want. I disagree that students have to stay at school for lunch. I could bring nonviolence attention to this situation by writting a letter to the school board saying my thoughts. I could also start a petition and get signatures of the students that agree with me. Overall, students should be able to leave school for lunch.

The thing that I disagree with the most in society is making gay marriage illegal. I believe that anybody should be able to marry who they want. If a person is happy with marring a person of the same sex, then let it be. It’s their life; let them do what they want. To protest this I could write letters to the senators and/or protest on State Street with my friends and other people with the same view.

  22. I want to practice civil disobedience by not showing up to any of my classes in High School. I think that they are a giant waste of time and will provide me no support for later in life. I feel that I should not go to any classes and accept a zero in these classes but then I would not graduate high school and would not be able to get a high paying job. I will however forget almost all of what is taught to me inside of High School because it will do me no good later in life.

  24. In the state of Wisconsin, it is illegal to get at tattoo under the age of 18, even with parental consent. I believe that with parental consent, you should be able to get a tattoo at the age of 16. It is one's own body, and I believe that even with parental consent it is unfair to put an age on certain laws. To change this law, I would want to protest in front of tattoo parlor, in hopes that someone would agree, and the law would eventually change.

I do not think there should be homework. I think kids work on enough stuff in school. Also, most kids don't do homework anyway, so giving them sheets to bring home is useless. Don't forget that making all these sheets kill trees, not that I care, but I'm sure other people do. Last but not least, homework is boring, and therefore, homework should be banned.

The topic I feel strongly about is the loss of land and the trees in the rain forest. The way I would stop this without violence would be to drain all of the gas and oil from all of the machines and send it to a city. Then I would steal all of the keys or the starters for all of the trucks and saws. Last I would let loose animal in all of the loggers’ food until they have to cut all of their losses and pack up and leave the forest.
